Dr. Jeremy Richmon is a fellowship-trained head and neck cancer specialist and surgeon specializing in transoral robotic surgery (TORS), remote-access (“scarless”) robotic thyroid surgery, and microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck.
Dr. Richmon is a pioneer in minimally invasive robotic techniques in the head and neck. He was the first surgeon to perform TORS at Johns Hopkins in 2009 and built the program into one of the highest-accruing national sites for TORS clinical research. Recruited to Mass Eye and Ear to lead its head and neck robotics program, he has grown it into one of the highest-volume robotic head and neck surgery programs in the country, with more than 1,000 robotic operations performed. He also pioneered remote-access and transoral thyroid surgery, performing the first transoral robotic thyroidectomy in the United States in 2016, and he is recognized internationally as an expert in remote-access neck surgery.
In addition to his work in robotic surgery, Dr. Richmon is a leader in head and neck microvascular reconstruction, having chaired the Reconstructive Section of the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) and led multi-institutional studies establishing national standards of care for free flap reconstruction after cancer surgery.
Throughout his career, Dr. Richmon has trained the next generation of head and neck surgeons, developing residency and fellowship curricula specific to robotic surgery. He has served on numerous national head and neck oncology and reconstructive committees. He is a frequently invited speaker at national and international meetings and has published more than 150 peer-reviewed papers.
Dr. Richmon's clinical interests include head and neck cancer, transoral robotic surgery, scarless thyroid surgery, skull base surgery, and microvascular reconstruction of the head and neck.

What Dr. Richmon treats
HPV-related throat cancer
Cancers of the tonsil and base of tongue, most of them caused by HPV. For early-stage tumors he offers TORS, usually with a neck dissection the same day. The pathology then determines whether radiation is needed, and at what dose.
Cancers of the head and neck, including the mouth, larynx, and salivary glands
Oral cavity cancer, laryngeal cancer, and tumors of the parotid and other salivary glands, treated with the least invasive approach that removes the tumor completely.
Thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer
Remote-access (“scarless”) robotic thyroid surgery through an incision hidden behind the ear suits selected patients with smaller nodules and cancers. Conventional thyroidectomy when that is the safer operation.
Reconstruction after cancer surgery
Free flap microvascular reconstruction moves living tissue from other areas of the body to rebuild the jaw, tongue, or throat, restoring speech, swallowing, and appearance.
